15 ways to Master the Art of Self-care
Your guide to loving yourself (and keeping the flame alive).
By the time we’ve reached adulthood, we should probably have the basics of “how to be a good friend” down. It means being nice, listening, and when your friend is feeling broken, you help build them back up. Most importantly, true friendship is when you can hang out together and genuinely have a great time.
Everyone NEEDS good friends in their life! And you know who should be your ultimate BFF of all your BFFs? YOU. That’s right. Be friends with yourself! That’s who you spend the most time with, after all. You’re stuck with yourself forever. And if you don’t get along with YOU, then life is going to be a bumpy ride.
That means treating yourself the way you would treat your best friend. Build yourself up. Be honest with yourself. Spend quality time getting to know yourself. And when you look in the mirror, cut the negative talk! #PositiveVibes only.
We’re even challenging ourselves to take this self-friendship to the next level: falling in LOVE.
Sure, it sounds a little silly, because falling in love is usually a romantic thing with bae. But if you think about it, we can fall in love with all sorts of things! We fall in love with people, places, paintings, songs, happy hour specials on appetizers.
And maybe it’s hard to muster the same excitement about ourselves as we do about a new puppy or a really delicious plate of nachos – but that’s because we’re so used to ourselves that sometimes we can’t see what others see when they look at us.
Before you worry about coming across as narcissistic or conceited, remember that self-love is more about being confident and comfortable in your own skin. You’ll be more attractive as a person, and help spread joy and confidence to others as well.
It’s time to take a deep look inward, fall head over heels, and be PROUD of who you are. Here are 15 everyday ways to help you fall in LOVE with yourself.
1. Dish out the compliments! Tell yourself why you’re awesome. Really think about what you like about yourself. Great style? Great hair? Great sense of humor? Get in the habit of acknowledging your good qualities right as you notice them.
2. Give yourself credit. You’re an MVP! You make a difference (in big and small ways) just by doing your thing! Think of something that went well because of you, or a person you helped out with your unique expertise, and give yourself a high-five.
3. Take yourself out on the town. Last time we checked, there’s no law that says you can’t enjoy a delicious meal without a date. Go to your favorite restaurant, order your favorite dish, and just enjoy the experience. Sit by the window so you can people watch, or bring a book to catch up on.
4. Catch a flick. Going to the movies alone is a liberating experience! You get to choose the movie (guilty pleasures, anyone?), pick out the snacks, and when the credits come on, you can just chill and soak up all the feels until the cleaning crew kicks you out. 5. Reflect on what makes you happy. What times in your life did you feel the most joy? When you figure out where your happiest memories came from, you can then start to understand why they occured, and then go create more of them.
6. Reflect on what’s made you sad. It’s also important to find patterns that may have put a damper on your happiness in the past. Try to get to the root of its cause. It can help you avoid making the same mistake!
7. Travel once a year. It doesn’t have to be exotic or expensive. Just far enough to get you out of your rut, and challenge your mind in different ways. You’ll be surprised what you learn about yourself when you leave your comfort zone.
8. Get your beauty sleep. If you make eight hours of sleep a nightly priority, you’ll be much happier, more energized, and easier to love! Say #ByeFelicia to grumpy you!
9. Soak up some rays. Another way to feel at peace with yourself is to enjoy the sunlight! That Vitamin-D is a natural mood booster. How can you NOT be friends with #1 when you’re feeling bright and sunny.
10. Forgive yourself.
Holding grudges is so high school. Being able to forgive and forget is mentally freeing – and that’s especially true for forgiving yourself. Look at mistakes you made in the past, learn from them, and move forward. #NoRegrets
11. Face your fears.
Choose a longtime fear you’ve held onto, and find a way to face it head on. Immerse yourself in it! Scared of rejection? Let yourself get rejected every day. Scared of heights? Take a rock climbing class. Not only will it help you put that fear to rest, but it will also give you a sense of pride and gain more self-respect.
12. Discover an exercise you love.
If you hate running, don’t run! That’ll just make exercise a mental warzone, instead of a fun release. When you have a workout that you genuinely LOVE doing, it’ll be much easier to do, and you’ll learn to love and appreciate your body. We’ve got plenty of ideas for you gym-h8ters out there.
13. Learn how to self-regulate.
With love comes boundaries, and sometimes we need to be a little strict with ourselves. You know staying up late makes you grumpy the next day, so set a bedtime goal and stick to it! Making a priorities list can help you choose which fleeting fancies are worth giving up. For example: maybe at 11pm, your mental health is more important than your favorite TV show. It’s up to you, but you’ve got options!
14. Make a vision board!
It can be a list on your phone, or a giant poster board plastered with inspiring images and quotes. However you do it, keep track of your dreams and goals. Regularly check in on your progress, and remember that your goals are within reach and #YouCanDoIt.
15. Get involved.
Find a cause you care about, and contribute! It can be a cause, a charity, or even a monthly book club. Investing in something bigger than yourself, will help you forget your own problems and feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
