JOMO: 10 Reasons Why Staying at Home is the Best Ever
Choosing to stay home? Here’s how to make it the best weekend ever. Home alone and it never felt so good! Here’s how to make the most of your me-time.
Your guide to an amazing weekend home alone.
Have you heard of JOMO? Yes, JOMO! AKA the JOY of missing out. It’s all the rage these days, and we’re here to show you what it is, and how you can make it part of your life.
People are choosing to let go of that FOMO pressure, realizing sometimes you just need to relax – and that’s okay. If staying home alone on a Friday night is what you’d rather do, celebrate it! (Real talk, after a long week at work, we’re stoked about a weekend with nothing to do.) JOMO is taking that *much-needed* time to care for ourselves, and feeling perfectly content doing it. #NoShame.
When you finally get to enjoy some me-time, remember it doesn’t have to be boring (unless you want it to be). Here are some of our favorite ways to embrace the JOMO life:
1. Wear Whatever You Want
You want to reach peak comfort in your unicorn onesie pajamas? JOMO is the way to go. Want to dress up just for the heck of it? JOMO. Want to try on your old prom dress? Experiment with a new hairstyle or give that eyebrow pencil a whirl? JOMO, JOMO, JOMO. You have the freedom to be yourself – worry free. Nobody around means no haterz to block out.
2. Unleash your Creativity
Alone time is the best time to let your creative juices flow. When your mind is still, you can focus on your thoughts and feelings, and allow new ideas to enter your mind from the universe. Give yourself the freedom to explore. Pick up a paintbrush or pencil and see where it takes you. Strum chords on your guitar. Read a book. Write a book. Create something totally and uniquely you, for you!
If you really want to enjoy JOMO, you gotta unplug from the world! Or at least unplug from social media. Do you need to be alerted every time your great aunt posts a picture of her dog? Put away your phone and enjoy the solitude! Let your brain soak up the peace and quiet. Try scheduling your phone breaks for hour-long increments and see if you can work your way up to a full day or even a week!
4. Indoor Camping
Maybe it’s pouring rain outside, or you don’t feel like dealing with the bugs and the “natural” bathroom facilities. Camping inside is a fun (and easier) way get your fill of adventure. Set up a tent or build a blanket fort in your living room. Light the fireplace if you have one. Turn on a nature documentary (now there’s so many to choose from!) and try this delicious Indoor S’mores recipe – no firewood required. #CampVibes
5. Spa Retreat
You don’t need to drop hundreds of bankrolls at a fancy resort spa in order to feel relaxed. Fill up a hot bubble bath for yourself, light the scented candles, and leave all your worries at the bathroom door. When that’s done, moisturize every inch of your skin, give yourself a pedicure, and wait for your nails to dry while lounging in a bathrobe with an avocado face mask. (Hey, this could even double as a healthy snack!) #SelfCare
6. Catch up on Projects
Is there something you’ve been wanting to get done, but haven’t had the time? JOMO is your chance! A weekend free of social events means time to catch up on projects. Go hang that bookshelf, finish that video you were editing, repaint that vintage coffee table. You’ll feel so accomplished afterwards, you can look yourself in the mirror and say, “I DID get around to doing that.”
7. Bake the Night Away
Do you have a list of recipes that look mouthwatering? Get your JOMO on and try all the ones you’ve been wanting to try. With the oven preheated, you can bake batches on batches of whatever strikes your fancy – so you’ll have plenty to share with friends and neighbors. We recommend these Carrot Cake Cookies for a yummy mix of spice cake and cream cheese frosting. #GetInMyBelly
8. Permission to Binge
Everyone was thinking it. Now we’re going to say it – curl up with a warm blanket and bingewatch your favorite TV shows! (Especially the shows with 12+ seasons.) Enjoy the guilty pleasure without feeling guilty. It’s okay to chill out on the couch from time to time, especially after a particularly stressful day. If it’s been a real doozy, warm up a bowl of Confetti Popcorn and indulge in a few handfuls. #TreatYoSelf
9. Find Your Happy Place
We think we know where it is, but there's only one way to find your true happy place: Get out there. Go for a stroll in the park. Find a comfortable reading nook in the library. Wander a museum. Try out that local café you always walk by but never go in. A day to yourself is your chance to explore and discover what you truly LOVE to do. Not just what you think you love, or what other people seem to love on social media. Once you find your happy place, you’ll have somewhere you know you can retreat to when you just want to chill out and feel happy.
When you stop wasting time trying to keep up with others, you’ll find you have much more time to focus on yourself. #Winning. Try carving out some minutes each day to work on your personal goals and dreams. They aren’t going to achieve themselves! We suggest getting a cute notebook to write down your aspirations, or a calendar for the wall to keep you motivated. Start one baby step at a time, and you’ll get there. See – JOMO is all about living the life you want.
JOMO can be a powerful force for good, especially when it comes to your mental state. We’re not saying you should never make time for friends or family, just don’t forget #1. (That’s YOU, boo!) Remember your self-worth doesn’t depend on other people or how many “likes” your pics receive. Time spent loving yourself and working on your own life should be much more joyous. #YouDoYou
